New Labour may have decided to make the Bank of England independent, but they would have had to do this anyway if Tony had got his way over joining the euro. The UK orginally secured an opt out from EMU in the Maastricht Treaty and if the euro was adopted then the Bank of England would have to be made independent to meet these rules.

This is one of the few achievments Tony Blair has made and shows that his legacy is almost worse than another famous Anthony- old Eden. There are some broad similarities: Both were damaged by unpopular foreign adentures and both followed America's orders (one to stop a war another to begin one). Eden left office because of health problems- maybe illness is the only thing to remove Tony Blair too.
