Battle for drunk pensioners continues…
Looks like Spellar’s idea to drain the wine lakes by giving it all to pensioners is getting some support in Westminster. We reported on the Parliamentary Question Spellar asked a while back and explained how ridiculous the whole idea was. Well according to this Early Day Motion, several MPs have joined his crusade.

That this House notes that the EU wine lake is 34.8 million hectolitres (765.5 million gallons) at the latest measurement; further notes that there are 74 million pensioners in the EU; further notes that every pensioner in the EU could be given a free bottle of wine every week for a year without emptying the wine lake; further notes the previous success of free distribution of surplus EU butter, cheese and beef; and therefore calls on the Minister for Europe to arrange for every pensioner in the UK to receive, free of charge, a dozen bottles of wine, to be distributed by local hon. Members to their constituents. |
First of all, I love the way the MPs have made sure they’re involved in the distribution. And if a couple of bottles of Bordeaux happened to go missing who would notice. I can’t see the EU supporting this. The Finnish government, who took over the EU Presidency last weekend, are pushing for warning labels on alcohol.
It’s a shame really, I would have loved to see my local MP dishing out free wine to pensioners.
